A Double Celebration.

My baby is 12 today.  I like having a child with a birthday that sometimes falls on Memorial Day.  It makes me all the more thankful for those who have and who do serve in our military.  Your selfless courage means that the ones I love the most can sleep peacefully at night.

Happy Bday Youngest Spawn!  I hope you enjoyed your weekend long bday extravaganza.

On the GrowDammit front, we did some reorganization.  Some of the colder weather greens have run their course, so those got pulled.  Some stray tomato seedlings got planted to see what they'll do.  The okra, that was suffering due to too much shade got moved to a sunnier spot as did the asparagus and strawberries.  We threw some sunflower, cosmos and gourd seeds in various places to see what would happen.  I have a really pretty perennial garden, but I really want a cutting garden too.  Farmer Ted spent a lot of the day cleaning up my $1 Jag.  It looks great.  (I guess we need some before and after shots.)

For supper, we had blackened shrimp over grits cakes with sides of GrowDammit spinach and collards.

Now...chillin' on the back deck.  Next...will the eldest spawn have to choke down broccoli without cheese sauce for a week?  He implores you to vote.  Actually he wants to stage a protest because "Why isn't pork a choice?"

  1. Are you growing the sunflowers for the purty blooms, for the seeds, or for the chokes? I recently discovered sunchokes and I have a GREAT salad recipe for them, if you are interested.

  2. Excellent question. Flowers & seeds up here. I don't think our season is long enough for the root systems to develop into substantial tubers. But, we will let some go into the fall and see what happens. I think we've waited too long to put seeds in the ground to even get blossoms this year, but stranger things have happened.

I have seen sunchokes in the food stores up here, but haven't picked some up. Throw me a good recipe and we'll try it.

  3. Now.... How can I NOT reply whenever I read the words... "Substantial Tuber." Seeing as how this is just too easy... I'll let it go.

Yep! The youngest spawn is now officially 12 years old.he's had his "Wrecking crew" over all weekend and they've had their fun but alas... All good things come to an end. Oh well... it was fun. Happy Birthday Kiddo.

Ah.... The dollar Jag. Lemme tell ya what. That car handles like a fucking DREAM. I've driven PLENTY of "Higher end " vehicles and the Jaguar has to be up there in the top 5. Whenever you go accelerate that car... It's like riding on a magic carpet; (Smooth and steady!) Appearance wise? (The big cat needs some work... But we'll get there. I spent the better part of the day cleaning it up so that Farmer Chele doesn't look like Granny Clampett rolling around town. I'd spend the day doing some more cleaning on it, today but.... Other hints have been dropped.

I'm washing windows today. (And tomorrow... And the next... and probably... the next.) When your Woman drops a hint? Take heed. So That's what my next big project is. We'll keep you posted on the developments.

  5. Celery, sunchoke and green apple salad

That's the recipe I'm in love with currently. I used store-bought Dijon, but I'd like to learn to make my own sometime, as I'm becoming increasingly wary of things that come in a package that cannot be composted....
